Playing Well in the Big City

The New York Times has long been referred to as that nation’s paper of record. A week after a fairly positive review of FIREPROOF ran in the Times, there is now record of the paper writing an equally positive feature story about Sherwood Pictures and the success of both the movie and The Love Dare.

Entitled “It’s a Healthy Marriage of Faith and Filmmaking,” the article quotes executive producer Michael Catt along with Alex Kendrick, the director and co-writer of the film, and Kirk Cameron, the lead actor. The story includes this paragraph:

“For Mr. Kendrick, there is only one explanation for the successes of ‘Fireproof’ and ‘The Love Dare.’ ‘We’re not trained and smart enough to make successful movies and write best-selling books,’ he said. ‘The only way that this could happen is if after we prayed, God really answered those prayers.’”

Let us know what you think of the article after you have read it.

The more I live, the more I am amazed at how surprised people are to find ordinary people trying to please God with their lives. I read the article and felt it was fair, if not with a tone of surprise at what was unfolding in front of them. The negative reviews were typical of an industry that goes crazy over movies laced with everything that offends God. May God continue to bless your amazing, awesome ministry!

First, let me say that I loved the movie and its message. I believe the secular media is always surprised when something that is done with integrity and that speaks the Truth does well because it is certainly not what the media and Hollywood normally throw at us. I believe the article was fair and when you think how many people read The New York Times and may become curious enough to see Fireproof; it is so incredibly cool to see how God works! It will be exciting to see in eternity the number of lives that were changed because of this movie. Thank you Sherwood and Kendrick brothers for your vision and your continued commitment to quality Christian filmmaking. We will continue to support you!

I'd like to thank the NY Times for giving a good review to this wonderful movie. Our local paper didn't have any review in spite of the first weekend being sold out in two area cities for the 7:30 showing. We even encouraged senior citizens to attend although it was not as relevant for them as for younger people. It was a positive film for everyone.
